Free FFP2 masks for students of the University of Germersheim

Best possible protection for young people must not fail because of finances

The student parliament (StuPa) of the FTSK Germersheim distributes 500 FFP2 masks free of charge to needy students as part of a social project, with financial support from the Studierendenwerk Vorderpfalz.

In times of the Corona Pandemic, the income of many students has collapsed and the ongoing lockdown is causing financial bottlenecks. As a result, many students at the Germersheim campus of Johannes-Guttenberg University in Mainz are also dependent on financial support and cover their living expenses in part through bridging assistance, BAföG or receive financial aid from the aid funds directly through the student services.
"It is a matter of concern to us that the students at a campus under our care are protected as best as possible against the Corona virus. This must not be allowed to fail due to financial considerations," says Andreas Schülke, managing director of Studierendenwerk Vorderpfalz, reiterating the importance of the project. "The federal government provides masks for welfare recipients, but students, who often have less to spend, have to buy their masks themselves," Anne Engelskirchen and Janne Bittner from the StuPa Germersheim explain their commitment to free masks. "Thanks to the help of the Studierendenwerk Vorderpfalz, it was possible to buy masks for about 250 students."

The StuPa at the Germersheim campus, together with the AStA Germersheim, submitted a funding application to the Studierendenwerk and asked for support in financing 500 masks. "This project provides optimal health protection for Germersheim students by distributing free FFP2 masks. We are very happy to support this and will assume the full cost of procuring the masks," says Andreas Schülke.
Students can submit a project funding application to the Studierendenwerk for cultural, social or ecological projects. Funding for the projects is usually a grant. In the case of the FFP2 masks, students contribute the personnel and organization for distribution.
The Studierendenwerk Vorderpfalz has around 150 employees who ensure that studying at the university locations in Landau, Ludwigshafen, Worms, Germersheim and Neustadt is a success. As a service provider for all aspects of studying, the Studierendenwerk operates the dining halls and cafeterias, social and psychological counseling centers, dormitories and daycare centers.
